There are many landmarks and tourist attractions to visit in Berlin – Reichstag is home to German parliament and was built in the late 19th century. This building has much in the way of history, in 1933 it was set on fire, in World War II it was bombed by the Allies and in 1945 it was stormed by Russian troops. There are markings of graffiti that can still be see which were left behind by the Russians.
One of Berlin’s most fantastic plazas is Gendarmenmarkt, as well as being home to some lovely neoclassical buildings, the plaza itself boasts much in the way of history, with collections and exhibition of German history being on display here.
Built in 1873 Berlins Victory Column also known as Siegessaule, this spectacular monument stands 227 feet high and is made in its entirety from granite, bronze and sandstone. It was built in order to commemorate the success of military campaigns in front of Berlin’s parliament building, there is an observation platform at the top, which can be reached via 285 steps which run through the column.
Olympiastadion was built for the 1936 Olympics and is well worth visiting. There were many world records set here in 1936, five of them by Jesse Owens.
