The German capital of Berlin is a vibrant and happening city with a number of fantastic festivals and events all throughout the year. These events are attended by local Berlin people, Germans from other parts of the nation and also many international visitors from all over the world. If it is a film festival, a party or a music festival that you are looking for; then the city of Berlin can probably deliver something to match your tastes. The many events in Berlin are one of the reasons why it is still such a relevant international city, and a great destination for overseas tourists. From high-quality concerts and music festivals, art exhibitions, parties, theatre performances and celebrations – Berlin is a fun place to visit at almost any time of year.
The New Year Eve Party at the Brandenburger Tor is the first major event of 2009, featuring a fun fair and a parade it is a great way to celebrate the start of a new year. International Green Week is held in Berlin from the 16th of January to the 25th of January in 2009, and this is an extensive exhibition for the food, agriculture and horticulture industries. On a different tip all together, Transmediale.09 takes place from the 28th of January for three days and is an international media art festival. If museums are your thing, then the Long Night of Museums takes place on the 31st of January and consists of a number of exhibitions, concerts, readings, theatre and many other attractions which take place in more than 70 museums around the city. Perhaps the largest and most recognised festival in Berlin is the Berlin Film Festival, taking place from the 5th of February to the 15th of the same month; Berlinale 2009 is a fantastic and highly recommended festival.
MaerzMusik 2009 is a festival of contemporary music that occurs from the 2oth of March to the 29th of the same month, providing a fabulous selection of modern contemporary musical delights. A festival taking place from the 7th of May to the 9th of May celebrates the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall with a number of exhibitions to remember and honour this momentous event. The Carnival of Cultures and Childrens Carnival of Cultures takes place on the last two days of May and is a celebration of the diversity of nations and cultures that help to make up the Berlin population. The ISTAF – International Athletics Meeting takes place on the 14th of June, attracting a number of top athletes from around Europe. The 13th International Berlin Beer-Festival takes place on the 7th of August until the 9th of August and will be of interest to many locals and tourists alike. In a different vain, the 23rd Jewish Cultural Days is a festival of Jewish culture, complete with concerts, readings and exhibitions that celebrate Jewish culture and history.
JazzFest Berlin takes place from the 5th of November until the 8th of November, and is widely recognised as one of the very best Jazz festivals in the world. The 20th Berlin Days of Fairy Tales occurs from the 5th of November until the 20th of the same month and is a good way to finish off the year. As you can see, the number and diversity of events in Berlin is absolutely huge, with a number of other events also taking place in 2009 which I did not have room to list. A visit to the city of Berlin will always keep you busy and entertained, with a number of Berlin events taking place to accommodate all possible tastes.
